What is this Volunteer Program?
The “Sustainable Livelihoods and Handicraft Development” program offers volunteers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by supporting sustainable economic empowerment within Sri Lanka’s vibrant handicraft communities.
As a volunteer, you will work directly with local artisans and craft producers, helping them enhance product quality, storytelling, and presentation while improving their access to the tourism market. You’ll also assist with documentation, photography, English translation, and marketing strategies, enabling artisans to better promote their traditional crafts in modern, sustainable ways.
This program is part of the global movement to mobilize volunteers in support of sustainable development and cultural preservation. By participating, you will help strengthen rural livelihoods, preserve indigenous skills, and promote Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage through responsible tourism and fair economic opportunities.
Upon completion, volunteers will receive a recognized certificate from Volunteers Global, acknowledging their contribution to sustainable community development and cultural preservation — a valuable addition to both educational and professional portfolios.
About the Volunteer Program
This program is ideal for those passionate about art, culture, community empowerment, and sustainable development. Over the course of two weeks, you’ll gain practical experience by working closely with artisan groups and village cooperatives. You’ll support them in refining their techniques, improving product appeal, and integrating eco-friendly practices that align with international sustainability standards.
Your contribution will help artisans increase their income opportunities while ensuring their traditional craftsmanship continues to thrive in a modern, sustainable economy.
Additional Opportunities
Sustainable Craftsmanship and Skills Development:
Assist artisans in adopting sustainable materials, waste reduction methods, and innovative techniques that enhance both quality and environmental responsibility.
Market Expansion and Promotion:
Support artisans in improving branding, packaging, and presentation to reach new local and global markets — including collaborations with tourism-based outlets and online platforms.
Cultural Exchange and Immersion:
Live within artisan communities and participate in daily life — learning traditional methods, understanding local values, and experiencing Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity firsthand.
Community Networking:
Through our partnerships with local volunteer and development networks, you’ll have opportunities to collaborate on community development and cultural heritage projects across the island.
Monday to Friday: Begin with an introduction to the artisan village or handicraft center. Meet local craftspeople and learn about their materials, techniques, and cultural heritage. Assist artisans with basic documentation, photography, and English translation to help present their stories and products more effectively.
Afternoon Activities: Participate in creative workshops such as weaving, pottery, or woodcraft. Support artisans in setting up displays, cataloging products, or improving workshop organization.
Weekend: Enjoy your free time exploring nearby markets, temples, or heritage sites, or join optional cultural and community exchange activities arranged through Volunteers Global.
Accommodation
Volunteers will stay with a local host family or in community-based accommodations that provide a comfortable and immersive experience in Sri Lankan culture.
