What is this Volunteer Program?
The “Community Empowerment Volunteering” program invites volunteers to live and work among local communities in rural and suburban Sri Lanka, contributing directly to social development and sustainable livelihoods.
This is an immersive experience where you’ll gain a deep understanding of community life while helping address real local needs — from education and health awareness to small-scale livelihood improvement and environmental care.
Volunteers engage in activities such as awareness sessions, home visits, youth mentorship, women’s skill-building programs, and household sustainability projects. Working closely with local government officers, teachers, and community leaders, you’ll help strengthen capacity and encourage positive, lasting change.
The program aligns with SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by empowering people through education, skills, and awareness.
Upon completion, participants receive a recognized Volunteer Certificate from Volunteers Global, acknowledging their contribution to Sri Lanka’s community development and grassroots impact.
About the Program
Volunteers are placed in rural or suburban communities where they stay with local families or in volunteer accommodation arranged by Volunteers Global.
You’ll collaborate with local authorities, development officers, and village committees to implement practical projects and awareness activities that benefit families and youth.
Typical focus areas include:
Women’s empowerment through entrepreneurship or skills training (e.g., craftmaking, digital literacy, sustainable living).
Education and youth development — helping students improve English, communication, and leadership skills.
Health and hygiene awareness — promoting clean water, sanitation, nutrition, and household waste management.
Sustainable livelihoods — supporting eco-friendly micro-enterprises and sustainable farming practices.
Environmental stewardship — engaging communities in cleanup campaigns, tree planting, and plastic reduction initiatives.
This program is perfect for volunteers who are passionate about grassroots development, social change, and cultural immersion. It offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute, learn, and grow — while experiencing Sri Lanka’s warmth and hospitality firsthand.
Volunteer Experience
During your stay, you’ll become part of the local community — living like a local, participating in daily routines, and forming genuine connections.
Every day brings a mix of structured volunteering, informal discussions, and cultural exchange. You’ll not only contribute to meaningful projects but also gain unique insights into rural life, traditions, and values that define Sri Lankan communities.
