What is this Volunteer Program?

The “Ocean Protection and Turtle Conservation” program offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to actively contribute to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by protecting marine ecosystems and supporting sea turtle conservation efforts in Sri Lanka. This program is perfect for those passionate about marine life, environmental conservation, and sustainable development.

As a volunteer, you will work alongside marine biologists and conservationists to help protect endangered sea turtles and preserve their natural habitats. Activities include monitoring turtle nests, protecting hatchlings, conducting beach cleanups, and educating local communities about the importance of marine conservation. By joining this program, you will directly contribute to the 2026 International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development and the UN’s directive to protect marine biodiversity.

Volunteers will receive a globally recognized certificate from the ZeroPlastic Movement, highlighting their contributions to SDGs and marine conservation efforts. About the Volunteer Program

This program is ideal for those who are passionate about ocean conservation and wish to make a tangible difference in preserving marine life in Sri Lanka. Over the course of a week, you will gain hands-on experience in marine conservation, working closely with local experts and community members to protect endangered sea turtles and maintain healthy marine ecosystems.

Week 1: Introduction to Turtle Conservation and Marine Protection

• Monday to Friday: Orientation and training sessions on sea turtle conservation, including nest monitoring, hatchling release, and beach cleanup protocols.
• Morning Activities (8:00 am – 12:00 pm): Participate in beach patrols to monitor turtle nests, collect data, and ensure the safety of nesting sites.
• Afternoon Activities (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm): Engage in community education programs, conduct beach cleanups, and assist in maintaining turtle conservation facilities.
• Weekend: Free time to explore local beaches, participate in snorkeling or diving activities, and visit nearby cultural sites.

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay in a shared volunteer house or eco-lodge located near the conservation site. This setting provides a comfortable and environmentally friendly living environment that allows volunteers to immerse themselves fully in the local coastal lifestyle.

• Shared Rooms and Facilities: Comfortable living arrangements with fellow volunteers and host family members.
• Meals Provided: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided during weekdays. Volunteers can enjoy their weekends exploring local cuisine in nearby restaurants.

Homestay Experience: Engage in daily life with a Sri Lankan family, participate in local rituals, and learn about traditional practices.

Weekends and Cultural Activities

Volunteers have weekends free to explore Sri Lanka’s beautiful coastal landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Whether you enjoy relaxing on pristine beaches, exploring underwater marine life, or visiting historic sites, there are numerous opportunities to experience the best of Sri Lanka.

Some popular activities and destinations include:

• Snorkeling and Diving: Explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life around Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, or Trincomalee.
• Beach Exploration: Relax on the beautiful beaches of Unawatuna, Bentota, or Arugam Bay.
• Cultural Sites: Visit the historic Galle Fort, the sacred city of Kandy, or the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa.
• Wildlife Safaris: Take a trip to Yala National Park or Bundala National Park for a chance to see elephants, leopards, and a variety of bird species.

Upon arrival in Sri Lanka, volunteers will be greeted by a seasoned team of in-country field staff, composed of mature, educated, and socially respected individuals committed to humanitarian work. The support team will provide comprehensive assistance, including:
