The “Volunteer Teaching and Youth Empowerment” program is a transformative opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and youth across underprivileged and rural schools in Sri Lanka. Many of these schools — including low-income community schools, schools for children with disabilities, blind schools, and deaf schools — face significant teacher shortages and skill gaps that affect students’ access to quality education.
Aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and in support of the UN’s 2026 International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, this program welcomes passionate volunteers who wish to empower young learners while contributing to global sustainability goals.
You will assist teachers and school staff in subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and environmental education, helping to enhance classroom engagement and inspire a new generation of confident, capable, and compassionate students.
In addition to your classroom role, you’ll have the chance to join community-led and environmental projects through our partnerships with local volunteer networks across Sri Lanka. These include climate action initiatives, community development programs, and cultural heritage projects, giving you a chance to expand your impact and connect with local communities on a deeper level.
Upon completion, volunteers will receive a recognized Volunteer Certificate from Volunteers Global, acknowledging their contribution to education and sustainable development — a valuable credential for future educational or professional endeavors.
About the 2-Week Volunteer Program
This program is ideal for volunteers eager to make a tangible impact in education and youth development, especially in schools and communities with limited resources. Over two weeks, you will gain more than 30 hours of practical classroom experience, working alongside local teachers, principals, and community leaders who are passionate about improving education in Sri Lanka.
You’ll have the opportunity to adapt your teaching style to meet the needs of diverse learning environments — including schools for children with disabilities and special educational needs — ensuring every child receives the attention and encouragement they deserve.
Additional Opportunities
Flexible Involvement in Weekly Projects:
Volunteers may also take part in community-based initiatives across Sri Lanka, such as beach cleanups, wildlife conservation, environmental awareness programs, and cultural preservation activities. These experiences allow you to contribute beyond the classroom while broadening your understanding of local challenges and resilience.
Networking and Cultural Exchange:
Through collaborations with local volunteer networks, you’ll connect with educators, youth leaders, and international volunteers from around the world. This cultural and professional exchange fosters lasting friendships, shared learning, and deeper global understanding.
Hands-On Teaching Experience:
Assist with lesson planning, classroom activities, and extracurricular programs. You’ll help integrate environmental awareness, life skills, and digital literacy into everyday learning — supporting both students and teachers in building stronger, more sustainable education systems.
