The “School Eco Club Development Volunteering” program is an inspiring opportunity to empower young minds across Sri Lanka while driving local environmental action. As a participant, you will collaborate directly with students and teachers to build and strengthen school-based eco clubs that promote sustainability, environmental education, and positive behavioral change within their communities.
This initiative aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), supporting the global call for volunteer-driven sustainable development. Volunteers will engage students in activities such as plastic reduction, waste management, tree planting, recycling, and climate education — helping to nurture a generation of environmentally conscious youth ready to lead change in their schools and beyond.
You can select a school anywhere across Sri Lanka, where you’ll be assigned to work directly with the local eco club and passionate students. Together with teachers, you will design and implement hands-on projects, environmental workshops, and awareness events that inspire long-term environmental stewardship.
All participants will receive a recognized volunteer certificate from Volunteers Global, backed by the ZeroPlastic Movement, highlighting their contribution to sustainability and youth empowerment — a valuable credential for future academic or professional pathways.
About the 2-Week Volunteer Program
This program is ideal for those eager to make a tangible environmental and educational impact while experiencing Sri Lanka’s culture and community life.
Over a two-week placement, you’ll gain over 30 hours of practical experience in school-based environmental action, working alongside students, teachers, and local coordinators to create meaningful change at the grassroots level.
Key Activities
Develop and strengthen School Eco Clubs by guiding students and teachers.
Conduct interactive lessons and awareness sessions on sustainability and environmental conservation.
Implement hands-on initiatives such as plastic audits, clean-up drives, tree planting, and recycling campaigns.
Support ongoing school-based environmental projects and create eco-friendly learning environments.
Additional Opportunities:
- Flexible Involvement in Weekly Projects: Volunteers can choose to participate in other ongoing projects across Sri Lanka, ranging from beach cleanups and wildlife conservation to community building and cultural preservation. This flexibility allows you to diversify your volunteering experience.
- Networking and Cultural Exchange: You will have the opportunity to network with over 11,000 volunteers from the ZeroPlastic Movement, engaging with ZeroPlastic clubs established across universities in Sri Lanka. This interaction provides a rich cross-cultural exchange, helping you build lasting friendships and professional connections.
Hands-On Experience: Volunteers will work directly with local educators, contributing to lesson planning, classroom management, and extracurricular activities. You will also help integrate environmental education into the curriculum, fostering awareness of sustainability from a young age.
Week 1: Introduction and Classroom Engagement
- Monday to Friday: Participate in classroom teaching, assist local teachers, and help plan and deliver lessons.
- Afternoon Activities: Engage in after-school programs, environmental workshops, and youth mentorship sessions.
- Weekend: Free to explore local attractions, participate in cultural activities, or join other ongoing projects such as beach cleanups or community outreach programs.
Week 2: Advanced Engagement and Community Projects
- Monday to Friday: Continue teaching and supporting students, focusing on specific educational needs identified during the first week. Integrate sustainability topics into the curriculum.
- Afternoon Activities: Participate in community development projects or environmental conservation efforts led by local ZeroPlastic Movement volunteers.
- Weekend: Final cultural exploration, farewell events, and reflection on the volunteering experience.
Throughout the placement, volunteers will reside with a local host family, providing a truly immersive experience in Sri Lankan culture. Accommodations are basic yet comfortable, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment. This setup allows volunteers to become integral members of the community, fostering deeper connections and understanding of local customs and traditions.

- Shared Rooms and Facilities: Comfortable living arrangements with fellow volunteers and host family members.
- Meals Provided: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided during weekdays. Volunteers can enjoy their weekends exploring local cuisine in nearby restaurants.

Volunteers have weekends free to explore the wonders of Sri Lanka, from pristine beaches and lush landscapes to historic sites and vibrant markets.
